1A.) What are the typical maintenance items I
need to know about?
* Chain adjustment- Need to check often and
adjust. The alignment is more important them the tightness
since mis-alignment produces more chain de-railments. Chain tension
needs to be "1/2 play at the tight spot. When loose and
throttle is applied vigorously the chain will come off. When
it does the idler/tensioner sometime "shifts" at frame and needs to
eb re-aligned with the rear sprocket. The proper adjustment
can be easily set by moving the tensioner in and out while
truning the rear wheel and observering the chain feed to the
sprocket. Tightned the tensioner to the frame when the chain rolls "centered"
into the sprocket teeth as you turn the wheel
in the correct direction (diven direction).
*Air Fliter- Once a month clean and oil lightly.
*Spark Plug- Check and clean every 3 months
*DE-carbonize the head- Annually. 4
bolts. Put piston at top-dead-center (top of stroke) Us a wire
brush and sandpaper to cleanup extra carbon on piston crown and combustion "dome"
2.) 2-strokes...some better than others??
All 2-stroke kit are from China. We use ONLY
Starfire EPA motors for reilabilty, SMOOTH power and kit friendly
features. We have installed and test about 5 different 2-stroke kits
and the Starfire is far better than all. Most notable is
little vibration and normal ehgine-jerk going off throttle. The Phantom 49cc are the smoothest
and go just as fast as the GT4 66/80cc, but just take
a little longer to get up into the powerband.
The Phantom (chrome motor) has a very progressive clutch too and
even less vibration. All GT4 and Phantom engine come with a 2 month factory
warranty.
3) 4-Stroke vs.
2-Stroke?
Our HONDA clone
and Honda GXH50 are:
FASTER
SMOOTHER TORQUEYER QUIETER MORE RELIABLE LAST
LONGER 2 YEAR FACTORY GUARANTEE (HONDA) EASIER OPERATION- NO
CLUCTH EASIER STARTING WARMS
UP AND RUN GOOD FASTER
LESS
POLUTING A BIT HARDER TO PEDAL-WIDER
STEM TO CLEAR ENGINE
NO SMOKE
A BIT HEAVIER NO
OIL/GAS MIXING
COST MORE
2-STROKE IS:
A BIT LIGHTER LESS
BULK SIMPLE TO REPAIR EASY
PEDALING LESS
MONEY!- great ride for the price
3A.) WHAT ARE SOME OPTIONS TO CUSTOMIZE MY NEW BIKE
(installed prices)?
a) Chrome
Springer $110
b) Direct-Drive-w/apdator/Sprocket $139 (coaster or 7-speed)
c) Coaster Replacement Heavy Duty Rear Drive
Wheel w/band Brake-$229
d.) KENDA road contour tires
26X2.125 $79
e.) Heavy Duty rear Coaster Wheel- $69 Wide
steel rim and 12g SS spokes with better wheel bearings and better
brake. You can get this to put on your self for this price or
get a rear drive sprocket professional aligned and installed for
additional $75.
f.) Center stand- $39- sometimes required with KENDA 26X2.125
4.) WHAT IS MOST COMMON PROBLEM?
There are not many real problems.
A common occurance is when the chain is a
bit loose and rider uses to much clutch and gas which may torque the
idler (chain-roller)off-center which then make the chain come off.
Best to always have proper chain adjustment (move only roller up
1/8" at a time, or too tight a chain will wear out your rear wheel
bearing). Ajust chain only at "tight spot". To find the "tight
spot' slowly roll the bike forward while fingering the slack in the
chain. 3/8-1/2 inch is good for slack.
I have had a few customer turn the throttle
too much and damaging the twist grib at the cable connection.
Make sure the gas is OFF when bike is
parked. Otherwise if engine gets flooded, you need to pedal
with the throtle wide open to clear the extra gas before the motor will start.
5.) CAN I PEDAL ANYTIME?- YES, but be
careful your feet stay on the pedals! and don't pedal in the
corners! Also, it is best when starting the bike to continue
to pedal as the motor comes to life.
6.) WHAT IS THE GAS/OIL RATIO MIXTURE?
7.) HOW FAST DO THEY GO?
8.) CAN I RIDE IN THE BIKE LANE AND PATH?
9.) CAN I REGISTER A MOTORIZED BICYCLE?
10.) WHAT ARE THE COMMON MAINTENANCE REPAIRS?
11.) WHAT TOOLS DO I NEED?
12.) IS THE ENGINE AFFECTED BY RAIN?
NO
13.) WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO START THE 2-STROKE?
14.) ON THE 7-SPEED BIKES,ARE THE GEARS UTILIZED BY THE MOTOR?
Most in-line engine bicycles, no matter
coaster-rear brake single speed (cruiser type) or 7-speed have a
separate rear sprocket installed to drive the rear wheel. The
bicycle gears do not turn driven from the motor and work normally as
you pedal. In that way you can assist the motor (step hills)
or just pedal when the motor is no running with
clutch dis-engaged (clutch lever on 2-strokes locks in
(disengaged)). When you pedal, the motor clutch needs to
be engaged and the motor rear sprocket/chain/front drive sprocket
rotate.
Check my models for color on the website. The
Schwinn 7-speeds are basically red and white or red and
metallic. The cruisers come in flat red and flat black.
I can get you more choices on the cruiser colrs (blue, green, gloss
red and gloss black too)
Any bicycle store has lighting for
bicycles and I am now looking into a 6V system driven off the engine
magneto. If interested I can put you on the mailing
list.
15.) CAN I SPECIFY THE COLOR OF THE BIKE?
16.) Will the four stroke have more power than the 80cc two
stroke? Will there be a big weight difference? How much more will it
cost? What kind of top speeds can I expect from the 80cc with the 58
tooth? Have you checked out spookytoothcycles? My
brother just ordered a bike from them and it came out to be about
$880 for their Qurve model with some upgrades. Their bikes are more
expensive but have the 80cc two stroke and they claim their bikes go
35-40mph.
Their is no doubt the 4-stroke geared right will motor up more
hills unassisted (no pedaling) than any 2-stroke. The 4-stroke
will weight only a couple more pounds and the pedals are set a bit
wider (clear the sides of the motor- but you hardly need to ever
pedal a 4-stroker) As for the price, I will be building only
Honda motor unit with grubee gearbox (not China motors) On the
deluxe XYZ (stretch frame- on my website) it will cost $835
The 80cc 2-stroke with 58 tooth will hit the powerband at about
13-15mph and top out at about 22mph. It will climb most any
hill unassisted if you hit the hill at 13mph+ (4-stroke.... about
5mph). I would recommend fully breaking in the engine with
flats and small hills only for 200 miles/4 tanks of gas. This
bike will cost you $489 (see website) I will install the 58
tooth for that price, but will need you to order first. Could
have it by middle of next week. 4-stroker around the end of
the week.
As far as spooky bikes, they have the same
guarntee as us 30 days parts, be we offer 1 year parts at cost +
shipping too. Many a customer have told me they had wished
they found me before spooky since my pricing is much better.
My Schwinn's are much better than Maricargi and I also think
the XYZ bike are stronger and better paints, especially the matt
(anodized) colors. They choose a motor different than mind and
tell people to stop and cool the engine when breaking in????All our
engines are lightly broken in, do not need to be stopped (unless
stuck in traffic for more that a few minutes). Best to run
16:1 for 200 miles on the mix and just don't hold the throttle open
for long periods.
All 80cc will go 40mph
if broken in right and geared right (36 tooth rear sprocket- good
for flats only- standard build has 44 tooth)
17) DO YOU INSTALL ENGINES ON CUSTOMER
BIKES?
Yes, we install our own kit StartFire
GT4 66/80cc and Phantom 49cc(slate spark plug head)on
customer's bikes. These are the best! (The 49cc is faster than 9 out
10 80cc) The cost is $185 labor for either the standard kit or a
with direct-drive installed too. All kit installs also include
installed front side-pull caliper brakes and custom motor mount (no
drilling in frame!).
The standard Phantom and GT4 are $225 for
the kits and the chromed Phantom is $235. (2-month guarantee) The
Direct Drive is $190 when installed.
We also install Honda GXH50 4 stroke kit in
frame w/ Whopper Stopper III gearbox for $260 and the complete kit
engine/GB is $499 (2 yr factory warranty Honda and 30 days on
GB)
We also have other options like tires,
offset seat post, springer, center stand, light set, etc, etc
17) What are the laws considering licensing,
insurance and registration?
As far as I know, the states consider them
as bicycles.
For a test we tried twice to register our
bikes at the local dmv. They basicly turned up away,
saying if it has pedals and they work it is a bicycle and you
must follow the road rules for bicycles.
In Ca, I only
know one person that applied for a moped license ($18 one time fee)
for their bike. I think he did it to get moped
insurance. Otherwise, follow the road laws, and wear a good
helmet and cops will leave you alone.
